There is an interesting conversation over at Y'all Politics concerning David Landrum and his support of Governor Ronnie Musgrove in 2003. Commenters have suggested that David Landrum dined with Governor Musgrove at the Governor's Mansion, and have speculated that perhaps they are friends and that friendship went beyond partisanship. What is for certain is that according to campaign finance reports filed in the Secretary of State's Office, on October 3, 2003, David Landrum contributed $1000 to Governor Musgrove's campaign against Haley Barbour.
Here are some contributions made by David and his wife Jill.
David 1.20.01 - National Republican Congressional Committee - $300
David 10.24.02 - Chip Pickering - $250
David 4.24.03 - Haley Barbour - $5000
David 10.3.03 - Ronnie Musgrove - $1000
David 3.2.04 - Mississippi Republican Party - $1000
David 5.18.04 - George W. Bush - $250
David 2.16.06 - Mississippi Republican Party - $5000
Jill 5.16.06 - Chip Pickering - $250
Jill 9.6.07 - Rudy Giuliani - $2300
This shows David and Jill Landrum have contributed several thousand dollars to Republicans. But consider the question his opponents will pose to Republican Primary voters, "If you have always given and continue to give to Republican candidates, what was so good about Ronnie Musgrove or so bad about Haley Barbour that on that one time, one month before the election, when Charlie Ross and Gregg Harper and John Rounsaville were all working every day to elect Haley Barbour, that you decided to give $1000 in support of Democrat Ronnie Musgrove?"
There was a poll in the field asking to what degree such support (giving $1000 to Musgrove) would impact the voter's view of a candidate in this race. Landrum has now released some polling information (it says he and Ross have the most exposure so far)so many suggest it was his poll testing the question and preparing for attacks on the issue.
With Ronnie Musgrove back as an opponent to Senator Roger Wicker, this issue could gain impact.

Tower, this is Ghost rider requesting a flyby.
Mississippi Republicans owe a lot to Haley Barbour over the past five years. To think this guy wants Republican voters to choose him when he was wanting Musgrove Part Deux. Nu-uh.
They fail to mention that Landrum gave Haley Barbour $5000 and served on his transition team.
Good try Rounsaville supporters. Good try.
I guess I should clarify, Landrum gave Barbour $5000 in 2003 and served on his 2003 transition team.
Let's see, how much money did Rounsaville, Harper, or Ross give to the Mississippi Republican Party?
If I understand it correctly, Landrum gave Barbour $5000 in 2003 AFTER he had defeated Landrum's choice, Ronnie Musgrove. I'm not sure how much Rounsaville, Harper, and Ross gave, but I know this:
Rounsaville took a leave of absence from his work to volunteer on the Barbour campaign, while Landrum was supporting Musgrove.
Harper was Barbour's Rankin County Chairman, while Landrum was supporting Musgrove.
Ross was a close Barbour campaign advisor, while Landrum was supporting Musgrove.
After Haley Barbour beat Ronnie Musgrove (David Landrum's choice), then and only then David Landrum buy his way back on to the side that Rounsaville, Harper, and Ross had been working so hard for the whole time.
Nice try Landrum Campaign. But Musgrove don't hunt.
fair and balanced: Please send me the details on David Landrum's contributions to Haley Barbour and I will update the above list. Thanks.

f&b. really?? this is a big deal. i might not know everything about everybody, but i would rather vote for someone other than who supported ronnie mustoe.
Mathias, once again you are wrong. Actually, Landrum gave Governor Haley Barbour $5000 on 4/24/2003 according to the Governor's finance reports.
If you really want to verify, go to his Jan.1 through April 30, 2003 report and look on page 347 of the receipts.
Mathias, is that before the Governor was elected? You know, maybe you should start listening to other people to get your information.
Jennifer, in the words of a famous Mississippi politician, "You do, what you got to do".
Oh, 'fair and balanced' you have cleared up everything. He gave to Haley Barbour in April, before the election, you are so right. Now everything makes perfect sense, except for that one nagging thing.
Less than five weeks before the election, David Landrum wrote a check for $1000 to Ronnie Musgrove. Did Daivd Landrum think Haley Barbour would lose? Did David Landrum just want to help out his friend Ronnie Musgrove buy a few more attack ads against Haley Barbour? Was David Landrum just playing both sides? Maybe you can explain this flip-flop. Maybe you can explain why David Landrum supported Ronnie Musgrove against Haley Barbour.
Mathias, why don't you go and write a column for the Northside Sun.
Again, you picked a loser last time, and you have once again.
Let me guess. That donation makes Landrum less of a Republican? Kind of like "Phil Bryant was on the partnership" made him a little less of a Republican?
Didn't work last time, and it will not work again.
Good try. Go drink some more kool aid. I will see you after the primary.
Your attack on whoever doesn't change the fact that less than five weeks before the election, David Landrum wrote a check for $1000 to Ronnie Musgrove. David Landrum supported Ronnie Musgrove against Haley Barbour. I know that eats you up and you wish you had known it sooner or that he had not done it, but you can not change who he is. I guess in October of 2003 David Landrum said to himself, "You do, what you got to do."
Mathias, after the primary, please don't disappear like all the other Charlie Ross supporters did last August. This is your last stand, and I understand that. I will let you have your five weeks of crowing about how great Charlie is and how bad Landrum is. Just do me a favor, don't disappear after Charlie gets beat.
At least have the courage to get back on the blogs and continue to be obnoxious.
Six weeks before the 2003 election Ronnie Musgrove was taking shots at Haley Barbour and David Landrum was giving him the ammo.
The way you people act like any Republican who dared to give money to somebody besides St. Haley is some kind of a traitor is embarrassing.
